Mental Health Crisis Care

We have an area of the Emergency Department reserved for those with serious mental health issues, such as those who have attempted or threatened suicide or who are having a psychotic episode.

Immediate Care for Those in Mental Crisis

We understand that people who are in a mental health crisis have a clinical condition. We treat every patient the way we would want our own family to be treated—with compassion, respect and understanding. If you are in a crisis and need help, we can provide the monitoring and immediate treatment you need in the Emergency Department. You’ll get the care you need here until you can be admitted to the hospital or released.

Dedicated Space

A Calming and Comforting Setting

The sights and sounds of an emergency room can be stressful under the best circumstances, but more so for those dealing with a mental health emergency or crisis. That’s why we created private, designated treatment rooms within the Emergency Department for those in crisis.

Immediate Evaluation and Care

You will meet with a crisis intervention clinician, a master's level trained, fully licensed, mental health professional while you are in the Bristol Hospital Emergency Department. The crisis intervention clinician will conduct an assessment to determine how we can best meet your needs.

After the assessment is completed, our crisis intervention clinicians collaborate with our psychiatry department to determine the best fitting plan of care for you. Whether you are admitted to one of our behavioral health units or discharged with an appointment to the Bristol Hospital Counseling Center or another outside agency, we aim to ensure that you are safe and that a plan is in place for you.

Monitoring and Safety

Mental health patients are closely monitored until they can be admitted for inpatient care or released. We will keep you safe, secure and as comfortable as possible while you are in our care.
