A mammogram is a quick, X-ray exam of the breast to look for any abnormalities — this is known as a screening or diagnostic mammogram.
What Is a Mammogram?
Preparing for Your Mammogram
At the Beekley Center for Breast Health & Wellness, you can receive your annual mammogram and other diagnostic tests. The test only takes 10 minutes and our caring staff strives to help you feel comfortable throughout your visit. Here's how you can prepare:
- Schedule the test for a time when your breasts are least likely to be tender. If you haven't gone through menopause, that's usually during the week after your menstrual period. Your breasts are most likely to be tender the week before and the week during your period.
- Before your mammogram, do not use deodorants, antiperspirants, powders, lotions, creams or perfumes under your arms or on your breasts. These products can interfere with the reading of the mammogram.
- If you are under the age of 50, you must have stopped breastfeeding for at least six months before a screening mammogram can be performed
- Bring any prior mammogram images with you to your appointment so that the radiologist can compare them with your new images.
How 3D Mammography Works
3D mammography, also known as tomosynthesis, is the newest technology in breast imaging. Advanced technology provides physicians with more detailed images of your breast for the most accurate diagnosis.
Clearer Breast Imaging with Multiple Angles
3D mammography creates a 3-dimensional picture by taking multiple images of each breast from many different angles. Conventional 2D mammography takes only two x-rays of each breast from two different angles.
X-Ray Arc for Clearer Results
In 3D mammography, the breast is positioned like in a 2D exam, but the X-ray tube moves in an arc around it. This information is sent to a computer to create clear, detailed 3D images of the breast.
Enhanced Clarity and Early Cancer Detection
Though the exam feels the same, 3D mammography offers better clarity and cancer detection, especially for women with dense breast tissue. Early detection is key for successful treatment and peace of mind.
