Common Reasons to See a Sports Medicine Physician

Acute Injuries

You have an acute injury that happens suddenly while you're playing or exercising. This includes everything from sprains and strains to knee injuries and dislocated joints. Symptoms you may experience can include sudden pain, swelling, weakness and loss of movement.

Chronic Injuries

You have a chronic sports injury that develops overtime, often when training, or you have developed tendinitis or a stress fracture. You will likely experience pain while exercising as well as swelling that gets noticeably worse post-activity, and continued pain while resting.

Torn Ligaments or Tendons

You have torn a ligament or tendon, for example a rotator cuff, ACL or labrum.

Meet Our Specialist

Kyle Lavery, MD


Dr. Lavery is a board-certified sports medicine surgeon. He completed his fellowship training at Massachusetts General Hospital through the Harvard Medical School Department of Orthopedic Surgery after earning his medical degree from Tufts University. Dr. Lavery is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He has worked on the medical staff of the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, Boston Bruins and New England Revolution.
